Cumberland Festival

We are going to be playing the Cumberland Festival this weekend; lot's of logistics going into this one, chiefly in finding the 3 seperate parts of my 8 person tent, which i've not used in 6 years or so.

I want to sail there but don't think i'll have time.

Meanwhile got two new contracts for web development so i'm also busy with work.

Make hay while the sun shines they say and i'm doing just that.

More later but i have to post this pic of one of my favourite people on the island, Rudy;

When i play guitar on the street, which i sometimes do, Rudy comes by and dances free form which always makes me smile. This pic is from the Morningside Cafe however, down in Fulford.

Morningside Cafe has the bestest coffee on Salt Spring Island in my opinion and also one of the nicest environments to enjoy it in. Also recommend the blueberry danish and the book and music collection is excellent too. There is so much i could say about this cafe but i don't really feel like typing an essay at the moment so you'll have to tune in for future instalments of this extremely sporadically written blog.

Joined the local Samba band just for kicks; it's a riot too and plenty of great photo ops which i hadn't really considered when i joined up this past winter. I'm playing bells which is not my first choice but that's what they needed. It's making me deaf so i'm going to have to stop at some point otherwise my guitar playing will surely suffer. I have some video of this parade also, which was the Luminaries Lantern Festival in downtown Vancouver. We started at coal harbour and marched to Canada Place. I got some HD video also but have not quite dealt with that yet; I watched it though and it's pretty good!

I'll post it when it's ready.

Living is Paradise

There is no doubt that Salt Spring Island is a sort of a blessed paradise on this planet. Perfect environment for so many things; nature walks of course, hiking, cycling, swimming, sailing, creating, partying, loving, fires on the beach, politically stable, solid economy, never any wars, no nuclear reactors nearby, great medical system and other social services, fantastically diverse community. It's just so lovely out here and the people are really great! I totally love Salt Spring Island, BC, and once again, feel so blessed to be here.

Surrounded by Orca

I was sailing north from Poet's Cove on South Pender Island the other day when suddenly i was surrounded by a Pod of Orca. There were perhaps 12 individuals in the group. I was trying to go wing on wing at the time in a light wind, a precarious balance especially when one first sets one's sails.

They caught me by suprise; I heard a loud splash of tail fluke and a distant cheer from a whale watching boat that was about 1000 metres astern off my port side. I turned and saw the whales swimming close to shore, along the bluff's where all the locals, seals, and various other boaters fish for Salmon.

These waters are rich in Coho, Spring, and other varieties of Salmon. It's herring spawning season too and there were millions if not billions of herring jumping out of the water and spawning, mainly at dusk.

I had an immediate thought when i saw the first Orca; 300 mil lens. I dove into the boat and dragged up the big artillery, a contax 35 mil film camera and a 300 mil lens. While trying to balance the tiller (unsucessfully) between my knees and keep Mystic on track i attempted to change lenses, from the wide angle that was on the camera to the 300 mil. Something went terribly wrong and i could not focus the damn thing. It was not mounted correctly. I saw that the Orca were going to be a challenge to shoot as they appeared relatively unpredictably on the surface and were gone before one could have a chance to frame and focus. I discarded the film cam and grabbed the digital SLR that was sitting always ready on the cockpit, gib flapping in the wind due to the relatively low wind and wing on wing running directly down wind. I guessed at where, directly off my port beam the next Orca might appear. Bingo! The Bull of the POD, leader of the pack surfaced right where i had guessed and i held my finger on the shutter shooting 5 frames per second of the whole sequence, set upon the simplicity of the Trincomali Channel and it's various Ilsands and islets. Here is the best of the sequence, shot on an 85 mil canon lens, not the right lens for the job really but all's well that ends well.

Pacific Yachting Magazine Publishes two photos by Kmax

I'm pleased to announce that Pacific Yachting Magazine has chosen to publish two of my photographs of Ganges Harbor for thier June issue. See pages 2, 24 & 25 (spread). While I want to point out that niether of these two pics is among those which I consider to be my best shots of Ganges or Salt Spring Island, I'm still delighted that they chose these pics and see that they fit the context of the article quite well. Here are the two pics they chose to use.

Kmax loves Sailing!

Sailed from Salt Spring to Pender Island in the rain. I love getting cold and wet and having my hand on the tiller for a long time. Was a fairly decent wind for the first leg, a few easy tacks and sailed almost right into the harbour before the wind died. Boat and navigation is functioning very well. I'v also improved my sailing skills this past year and feel ready for a trip the Queen Charlotte Islands throught the inside passage. Where this is all heading; a trip south all the way to Costa Rica to visit the cloud forest and my friend, nick, who has some land there with waterfalls and stuff.

There are more birds in the cloud forest than anywhere else in the world probably. Sailing down there would be the adventure of a life time for us. Then of course that's so close to panama and the canal. We could either go through the Canal and sail up the east coast of central America and out to the caribean via cube and nassau. I once was in Nassau and the scuba diving is crazy good. Water is very very clear, good visability and there are layers upon layers and swirls of different colored fish swimming about.

Alternately we could turn north west from Costa Rica and go the the hawaiian Islands. That is all half a year away though and i guess i'm just dreaming to get thgrough the winter. It's nice here where we are now anyway, the sun just came out!!!

I'm going to ride my bike to the gym and then come and get back to work.

New Developments

Just sailed back to Pender Island and anchored at Otter Bay last night. We sailed out from Ganges Harbour due to an infestation by giant reptiles which were stalking and eating the small sailing vessels and tugboats there. We had a favorable wind all the way to pender, wind was about 10 knots from the NW and we went wing on wing for the 2nd leg.

Ganges_croc_eats_tugboat

Our auto pilot is busted so i was on manual tiller the whole way and single handed for the most part, as Kathryn, a.k.a. Admiral Nimetz, had a snooze and made tea and such while i sailed her over.

It Was a golden rose colored sunset. Did not use the engine coming into Otter bay...sailed right in and dropped anchor in 20 feet of water. Put out 130 feet of chain and had spare anchor ready to go due to a weather watch for high winds. Lot's of fetch where we are right now, althogh convenient for the morning, not the wisest choice of anchorage really.

That's all for now...it's starting to get light out and it's overcast.

Oh yes..one more thing...i'm booked into a really good recording studio on Salt Spring Island for this Tuesday. I'm really really excited about it:-)) Daryl Chonka is going to enginneer the recordings for me which is great!!! His work is world class so once again i'm so stoked about it!!!

Working hard and working smart

Well i've been working pretty hard on a variety of web sites and maps. Chiefly on www.mapofsaltspring.com, www.mapofpender.com, www.roperresources.com and the Ptarmigan Music Society Website

While the map of Salt Spring Island that I created sold out for advertising in 3 days of marketing in the spring of 2009, Pender followed suit after about 2 months. Both are number 1 in search engines for the search terms, Saltspring Map, and Pender Map respectively. Chris Roper of Roper Resources is quite happy with his new web site and it's showing up very well in the search engines already; making the top 10 in google for key words such as "saab seaeye" and "AUV 62", two of his main underwater robotics products.

Soon Kathryn and I will be heading up to desolation sound on our sailboat, The SV Mystic and i'm looking forward to that!

It's been a great summer:-) Hope yours has been too!

Ok..i'm back and much is afoot. Lot's of travelling this summer as I checked out some of the other gulf islands. Salt Spring, Texada, Galiano, Pender, Saturna, Mayne, the San Juans, and Vancouver Islands were included in this series of road trips.

Would have been nice to do it by boat but i'm not quite there yet...only $20000 short though;-)

I've decided to get a sailboat and sail up to the Queen Charlotte Islands and then down to South America and then out to the South Pacific. Maybe stop at Easter Island on the way and say hey to my big stone buddies out there.

Much photography this summer and for a look at that go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/ultrabluelake

I've got a photo and sculpture exhibit coming up and i'm finally going to make the lamp that i was going to make like 10 years ago. It's a good idea but i can't say what it is yet.

It would be nice to have a partner in the sailing trip but i've not met a woman yet that i could live with on a boat and not go completely mad;-)

I'm good with a bit of solitute however. I like solitute. Not a hermit and can be very social also but i think i would be alright on my own on a boat for a while.
